Specifying low-voltage switchgear components looks straightforward until one wrong assumption turns into a failed inspection or a mid-project delay. Here are seven mistakes that come up often — and how to avoid them.

1. Choosing on price before spec

The cheapest relay or contactor on a supplier’s list isn’t cheap if it doesn’t hold up to the load or duty cycle your design actually needs. Match the component to the application first, then compare price across suppliers that meet the same spec.

2. Skipping the burden rating on current transformers

It’s easy to focus on the CT ratio and overlook burden rating — but an undersized burden rating leads to measurement error that won’t show up until commissioning. Always confirm burden rating against your actual connected load.

3. Assuming certification without checking it

“Certified” means nothing without a standard attached to it. Ask specifically which standard — IEC, DIN, IS, ANSI — and request the documentation. A supplier that can’t produce it on request usually can’t back the claim.

4. Overlooking environmental ratings

A relay or contactor rated for a clean indoor panel won’t necessarily hold up in a humid or dusty installation environment. Check IP ratings and temperature range against where the panel will actually be installed, not just the electrical spec.

5. Not confirming mounting and physical dimensions early

DIN rail vs. panel mount, and the physical footprint of a component, can quietly derail a panel layout if it’s confirmed late. Get exact dimensions from the datasheet before finalizing panel design, not after the component arrives.

6. Treating all door limit switches as interchangeable

Position-detection switches vary in actuation force, mechanical life cycle, and mounting orientation. A switch rated for occasional access doesn’t belong on a panel with frequent daily access — mechanical life cycle matters more than it looks on paper.

7. Not planning for lead time on custom or high-demand components

Standard components are usually available quickly; specific ratings or configurations can take longer. Confirm lead time against your project timeline before the component is locked into your BOM — not after.
